Nice looking pair of 604's

Someone here should jump on these! I know we have members who live close to their location. I'm tempted to drive there myself--I've never heard 604's with Mantarays and I'd love to own this pair. I think they should come with the newer style (dual band) crossovers--right? Good price IMHO if drivers and crossovers are in good working order--original Altec 612 cabs look nice as well!

They aren't original 612 cabinets though as the seller claims.

I ended up with them. What kind of cabinets do you figure they are? Definately not home made. I can post pictures tomorrow. Ed

They look like Homebrew cabs, maybe they have the same cuft of a 612 but definitely not original altec cabs.

Ed, I'm glad to see that one of our members grabbed these! I was really tempted to make the 5-6 hour drive (each way) myself. Did you find out about them being for sale from my thread here? Do they have the "newer dual EQ" style crossovers (with h.f. compensation)? If so, IMHO those crossovers are phenomenal passive crossovers! Looking forward to some pics. As far as I'm concerned, if they're in good working order, $900 is a great price even for just the 604's and crossovers--the cabs (if well built) are a nice bonus! Of course, I'm a sucker for just about any vintage Altecs that have Mantarays and Tangerines!

No, I found them myself. I was sitting around at work and had a few minutes to kill before I was to leave to meet my wife to go out to dinner, so I went to CL and typed in Altec. There they were, about 40 minutes from me. I had no intention of trying to find 604s - I was looking for some big horns - but the price seemed good enough that I could buy 'em and try 'em and not loose any money if I didn't like them. I blew off dinner, and drove right down. Nice guy, a bunch of nice equipment, and they sounded great to me, albeit a little light on the bass. I got them for $820, and my wife was a VERY good sport about dinner! I haven't tried them yet, but I plan to have a shoot out between them and my19s in my living room, and sell the losers to pay for the 1005 horns that I'd like to try out with the A-7's in my shop.

I'm not sure if the photos uploaded correctly, But the cabs are white oak veneer on a plywood core, 20-1/2" w x 29-1/2" h x 20" d, with lots of nice details- i.e. all the cut outs are cleanly routed, t-nuts for the for the cross over fasteners, and nicely done miters on the interior diagonal braces etc... Clearly not quick and dirty home brew. I think that they do have the dual EQ crossovers - at least they each have 2 knobs at any rate.

Hard to believe those are light on bass.... maybe it was just his equipment? The bottom knob of the crossover pulls out to do different things...that's cool.

Yes, those are the crossovers I was talking about--those are GREAT crossovers--considerably better than the earlier 604 crossovers. As Cradeldorf said, maybe it was the seller's gear that was light on bass. If not, you may need to adjust the tuning of the cabinets. If both duplexes and crossovers are in great shape, $820 is a real bargain as far as I'm concerned. Please keep us posted on how they sound with your stereo system--and more pics would be nice too (the fronts of the drivers for example)....
